A crop circle is a pattern created by flattening a cereal crop (usually). Many crop circles are thought to be the work of hoaxers, although relatively little scientific study has been done on the matter. Aliens, ghosts, or other unknown forces have been blamed for the formations, although nobody truly knows how many of them are made. They are much more common in Europe than in North America.
In 1991, two hoaxers, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, took credit for having created many circles throughout England after one of their circles was described by an investigator as impossible for human beings to make. Formations are usually created overnight, although some are reported to have appeared during the day.
There seems to be a notable difference between man-made crop circles and those of unknown origin. Man-made circles are obviously flattened by mechanical means, but many others appear to have cellular damage to the stems near the surface of the ground, as if heated by microwaves.
It is the opinion of UPROAR that many crop circles are the result of hoaxes, but some appear to be genuinely a mystery.
Wheat, barley, and other grass-like cereal crops appear to be the primary target of whatever (or whomever) is making crop circles. We don't have a lot of crops like that in Arkansas, so we don't see much of this activity.
